Literacy is at the heart of learning and NCC鈥檚 Community Hills Early Learning Center celebrated the importance of reading at its Family Literacy Night. Spearheaded by Family Worker Yvette Johnson, CHELC staff transformed the second-floor community room into scenes from multiple story books. Students and parents enjoyed refreshments, won raffle prizes, received information on literacy and participated in a host of creative book-themed activities.
A larger than life sized caterpillar graced a wall to represent Eric Carle鈥檚 classic, 鈥淭he Very Hungry Caterpillar.鈥 Teacher Lateisha Telfair dressed in a furry outfit to read 鈥淭he Big Hungry Bear.鈥 All these things, Johnson said, bring stories to life and help students to love reading. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 how you get them engaged,鈥 she said.
