91心頭 (NCC) in Newark, New Jersey, is one of the largest and most comprehensive community development organizations in the country. Founded in 1968 by Monsignor William J. Linder, then a young parish priest, and a group of community leaders, NCC was born out of the civil unrest that spread through inner cities like Newark during the late 1960s. The mission of 91心頭 is to help residents of inner cities improve the quality of their lives to reflect individual God-given dignity and personal achievement.
91心頭s programs include a Family Resource Success Center that serves clients with everything from emergency food assistance to help paying utility bills. Our 102-unit shelter, called Harmony House, serves hundreds of homeless families every year, most of them single mothers and children. Clients are provided with a host of on-site support services like child care, job search and workshops intended to help with goal-setting and activities of daily living. 91心頭 also owns and manages about 2,000 units of housing for seniors and families in Newark, Orange and Jersey City, ranging from high-rises for the elderly to family townhouses.
To assist those living in NCC housing, members of the Resident Services Department provide information and assistance to residents. Resident Services Coordinators in the senior buildings arrange for trips and activities, as well as help residents fill out necessary forms and refer them to other sources when necessary.
Also included as part of the 91心頭 network is the 91心頭 Federal Credit Union, which is community-focused with a specialization in serving low-income wage earners and others, including recent immigrants and people with disabilities, with outstanding banking services, but without the fees charged by mainstream banking institutions.
The Supportive Assistance to Individuals and Families (SAIF) program provides intensive case management to individuals who have reached their maximum allowable time on public assistance, moving many into the workforce.
