Jerel Waxter was determined to ?nd a job. The 19-year-old ?lled out applications at various businesses every day over the summer and hoped for the best. No response. In late summer, he saw a sign on the window of New Community鈥檚 Family Resource Success Center in Newark, located in 91看片鈥檚 Pathmark Shopping Center, indicating one could ?nd assistance with job search. 鈥淚 came here and one of the ladies helped me put together a resume,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 took a copy next door to聽the Pathmark that same day. I then kept coming back to the center and Pathmark every other day.鈥� A week and a half later, Waxter was hired by Pathmark as a cashier. 聽鈥淚 love it, it鈥檚 great,鈥� said Waxter, a graduate of Newark Collegiate Academy, who is now studying criminal justice at Essex County College.聽Juggling school and work is not easy. Waxter attends classes in the morning and reports to work at the Pathmark by late afternoon, when his shift begins. He said he has told his friends about the Family Resource Success Center and encouraged them to stop by.聽鈥淭hey haven鈥檛 made their resumes either, so it is a good resource for them. It鈥檚 convenient and they are 聽really interested in helping you here,鈥� said Waxter, who attended Bloom?eld College last year and plans to continue his education at William Paterson University once he graduates from Essex County College. Joann Williams-Swiney, director of the Resource Center, said it is gratifying to know that the resources of the center have helped a college student who is diligently working to pursue an education. 鈥淲hen I see Jerel passing by, it is just reinforcement that what we do here is making a difference,鈥� she said
