Swinging with Purpose: 91��Ƭ’s 28th Golfing for a Cause Drives Support for Youth

91��Ƭ hosted its 28th Golfing for a Cause fundraiser on Sept. 29 to benefit its Youth Services Department and the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund. Supporters gathered at in Livingston for 18 holes of golf and networking, along with an evening reception that included cocktail hour, dinner and raffle prizes.

91��Ƭ Interim Board Chairman Edgar Nemorin thanked all the participants, sponsors and donors for coming to and supporting the event. He talked about 91��Ƭ’s Youth Services Department, which will receive proceeds from the fundraiser, highlighting how 2,864 youth were served in 2024 through core programs and events. He said programs like that are essential to families.

“One of my personal missions is that youth and education opportunities should not be defined by a kid’s or parent’s zip code,” Nemorin said.

91��Ƭ CEO Simone Gagneron expressed her gratitude to all in attendance.

“Thanks to the continued support of our sponsors, along with everyone who participated, donated and purchased raffle tickets, NCC can continue doing great work for those in the community,” she said. “We’re so excited to be able to host this event and give everyone a day away from the office while supporting our youth.”

Christine Stern, Senior Vice President at , a Platinum Sponsor of the event, spoke during the networking reception. She commented about how there was great energy throughout the event and how HUB is happy to support 91��Ƭ.

“We live in a very complex and challenging world. God bless 91��Ƭ for the work you do,” Stern said. “We at HUB feel blessed for being a sponsor of this wonderful event and a partner in helping to manage the business risks associated with the work NCC does.”

Rocco Schiaffino, Assistant Vice President at , another Platinum Sponsor, addressed the crowd as well.

“It’s a privilege to partner with NCC. I believe we have worked together for over 20 years and we are very happy to play a small part in all the amazing work that NCC does,” he said. “We participate in many outings and this is one of our favorite events of the year. We are just very happy to be part of it.”

During the evening reception, prizes were given out to golfers. The first place team was comprised of Keith Kirkland, Norman Hymowitz, Jeremy Hernandez and Greg Ward. A variety of attendees also won raffle prizes.

91��Ƭ hosted its 27th Golfing for a Cause fundraiser on Sept. 23 to benefit its Youth Services Department and the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund. Supporters gathered at in Livingston for 18 holes of golf and networking, along with an evening reception that included cocktail hour, dinner and raffle prizes.

91��Ƭ Interim Board Chairman Edgar Nemorin thanked all the participants, sponsors and donors for coming to and supporting the event. He talked about how 91��Ƭ’s founder, the late Monsignor William J. Linder, regarded stewardship in high regard.

“Stewardship is sacrificing your time, talent and treasure for a common good. Thank you to all of you today for being good stewards to 91��Ƭ,” Nemorin said. “We are truly blessed and honored for the support that we continue to receive.”

91��Ƭ CEO Simone Gagneron said the presence of supporters, community leaders and friends made the event special and the organization’s work possible.

“NCC was founded on the belief that communities are stronger when we lift each other up. From affordable housing projects that give families a stable foundation to our education programs that equip individuals with the skills they need to thrive, we are making a difference every day,” she said. “Your support allows us to continue making an impact in our community.”

During the program portion of the evening, 91��Ƭ presented Dr. A. Zachary Yamba with a special recognition. Yamba retired from the NCC Board of Directors in December after serving for 11 years, five of which he served as chairman. He received a proclamation from the city of Newark and one from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, highlighting his years of service to 91��Ƭ and the community at large. He was also gifted a round of golf with three guests.

“Dr. Yamba’s accomplishments and impact to the community, nonprofits and educational landscape have been extraordinary,” Nemorin said. “He has been a leader, advocate, mentor and a friend to this organization for many, many, many years.”

Yamba said he was honored to accept the recognition and said that he continues to believe in the vision Monsignor Linder had for 91��Ƭ.

“That vision has endured since the riots in 1967 in Newark,” Yamba said. “Those needs continue today, perhaps even more so than back in 1967.”

Retired 91��Ƭ CEO Richard Rohrman served as the evening’s emcee. Although he’s been retired for three years, he continues to remain connected with the organization.

“I’ve seen all of the good work that 91��Ƭ has done and continues to do under Simone’s leadership,” he said. “I’m just really thrilled to be up here and have the opportunity to do this and stay connected to 91��Ƭ.”

Gagneron highlighted a number of initiatives at 91��Ƭ, including plans for The Morris, a 120-unit building for families in Newark’s Central Ward that will be fully Section 8 affordable housing, as well as eight affordable two-family homes, which NCC expects to break ground on in November. She also talked about plans for to offer green certifications to students starting in 2025.

Bill Passarotti, Senior Vice President of , spoke on behalf of the company which was one of the Platinum Sponsors of the event.

Proceeds from Golfing for a Cause benefit 91��Ƭ’s Youth Services Department and the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund. Desiree Crespo, a recipient of the Monsignor Linder Scholarship for her daughter, Mia, addressed the group at the event to share what the scholarship meant for her family. Crespo had to work multiple jobs to be able to afford tuition at her daughter’s Christian school. The pair would complete Uber Eats orders after work and school to help offset the cost.

“Just to know that I was able to not pay tuition for an entire year because of the scholarship that 91��Ƭ gave to me was great,” Crespo said. “My daughter and I were able to enjoy time outside of our car and in our home. I just want to say thank you to 91��Ƭ.”

During the evening reception, prizes were given out to golfers. The first place team was comprised of Michael Birch, Sal Caldarone, Douglas Eisenberg and Jeremy Garlock. Sebastian Troncoso won the men’s longest drive contest, Sarah Higgins won the women’s longest drive contest and Shane Brooks won closest to the pin. A variety of attendees also won raffle prizes.

Withum Prepares Thanksgiving Dinner for Harmony House Families

Volunteers from accounting firm Withum prepared and served a traditional Thanksgiving dinner to families of Harmony House, 91��Ƭ’s transitional housing facility for homeless families, at Monsignor William J. Linder Plaza on Nov. 21. In addition to the meal, Withum also provided Walmart gift cards, which were raffled off to families. This was the first time since 2019 that the annual event has been held for families in person because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 91��Ƭ thanks Withum for its generosity.

Withum Provides Thanksgiving Dinner to Harmony House Families

Accounting firm Withum provided individually wrapped Thanksgiving meals, including desserts, to the residents of Harmony House, 91��Ƭ’s transitional housing facility for homeless families. Volunteers from the firm cooked, baked and packed the items, which Withum partner Mike Pintabone delivered on Nov. 22.

In years past, Withum has hosted the dinner at Monsignor Linder Plaza (formerly St. Joseph Plaza). To ensure everyone’s safety with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the firm decided to deliver prepackaged meals instead. Harmony House residents picked up the items to enjoy in their homes.

Harmony House Residents Receive Thanksgiving Baskets

For the sixth year in a row, , a program serving adults with autism and related developmental disabilities, organized a donation of 10 Thanksgiving baskets to Harmony House, 91��Ƭ’s transitional housing facility for homeless families. Representatives from Independence360 and accounting firm brought the baskets to Harmony House Nov. 20.

Withum donated the turkeys for the baskets and Independence360 and its clients provided the laundry baskets and all the other items inside, which was enough for recipients to make an entire Thanksgiving meal. The baskets also included laundry detergent for recipients.

Independence360 Whippany Supervisor Cassandra Flanagan coordinated the efforts for the donations and made sure Harmony House was available to receive the baskets the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, giving residents time to prepare a meal at home for the holiday.

91��Ƭ Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

91��Ƭ staff, residents and supporters gathered to celebrate 91��Ƭ’s five decades of service and honor Founder Monsignor William J. Linder at the 50th Anniversary Gala March 3.

Guests dressed in suits and gowns enjoyed a cocktail reception, formal dinner and dancing at the Hilton Meadowlands in East Rutherford. Music was provided by , an all-female big band.

“The 50th Anniversary Gala was such a wonderful night. We honored Monsignor Linder for his leadership and vision and Madge Wilson and Newton Richards for their long service as members of our Board of Directors,” said 91��Ƭ CEO Richard Rohrman. “It was also a much deserved opportunity to thank the 91��Ƭ family and staff who make us who we are, and support us every day. It was good friends, good food, good music and an all-around good time.”

, which has been associated with 91��Ƭ for decades, served as the Anniversary Sponsor for the event. The company has been instrumental in many NCC projects, including the recent completion of A Better Life, 91��Ƭ’s newest facility to serve the chronically homeless, and the current renovation projects at four of NCC’s Newark properties.

“What they did for us, especially with this event, they’re spectacular,” Monsignor Linder said of Claremont. “More things wouldn’t happen in 91��Ƭ if it wasn’t for them.”

Rohrman provided a welcome message and thanked everyone in attendance for their support and dedication to 91��Ƭ’s mission.

Monsignor Linder also provided remarks, commenting that he was happy to be present to see 91��Ƭ reach the 50-year milestone.

Mistress of Ceremonies Diane Johnson, retired field office director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and a consultant for NCC, talked about the many offerings of 91��Ƭ, which provides services to inner city residents of all ages, from day care to a nursing home.

Current board members Newton Richards and Madge Wilson received plaques recognizing their five decades of service to 91��Ƭ.

A highlight of the gala was the presentation of a video showcasing Monsignor Linder and stories from those who know him well. It also featured several people who have directly benefited from 91��Ƭ’s services.
