91心頭 Hosts Congressman Payne and Councilman Kelly for National Diabetes Month Roundtable /2022/11/new-community-hosts-congressman-payne-and-councilman-kelly-for-national-diabetes-month-roundtable/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-community-hosts-congressman-payne-and-councilman-kelly-for-national-diabetes-month-roundtable /2022/11/new-community-hosts-congressman-payne-and-councilman-kelly-for-national-diabetes-month-roundtable/#respond Wed, 23 Nov 2022 14:52:16 +0000 /?p=22279 The 91心頭 Adult Learning Center, 563 Orange St., Newark, served as the host site for the National Diabetes Month Roundtable presented by Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr. and Newark West Ward Councilman Dupr辿 Kelly on Nov. 22. The discussion focused on diabetes care and how the Inflation Reduction Act helps reduce costs for seniors with diabetes.

Congressman Payne shared his experiences and challenges living with diabetes and encouraged everyone to take the advice of their medical professionals to manage the condition. He also talked about the high cost of insulin, particularly for those without insurance, sharing a story about how he accidentally left his insulin behind one time when he traveled to Washington, D.C. and was shocked at the high cost to pay out of pocket for a small vile.

Residents of 91心頭 Manor Senior attended the roundtable, including Sherman Gibbs who spoke during the event about his experiences as a diabetes patient.

The roundtable was conducted virtually via Zoom for a wider audience and included Dr. Johnnie A. Lee, internal medicine, and Dr. Katherine York, AARP New Jersey, as virtual speakers.

91心頭 Extended Care Facility Helps Patient Resume Self-Sufficient Lifestyle /2022/08/new-community-extended-care-facility-helps-patient-resume-self-sufficient-lifestyle/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-community-extended-care-facility-helps-patient-resume-self-sufficient-lifestyle /2022/08/new-community-extended-care-facility-helps-patient-resume-self-sufficient-lifestyle/#respond Tue, 30 Aug 2022 18:22:34 +0000 https://72375d9a61.nxcli.io/?p=21788 When Karen Sewell arrived at 91心頭 Extended Care Facility, she was in poor health. She had experienced two massive heart attacks, a brain aneurysm and a stroke. She had been at University Hospital for one year and spent three months in a coma.

She also underwent surgery that required rehabilitation.

They cut out part of my skull to get to my bleeding brain, she said. I knew I would need therapy after that.

When she left University Hospital, Sewell spent some time at a couple of other facilities before transferring to Extended Care in March. The 91心頭 facility is closer to her family members.

Upon arrival at Extended Care, Sewell was unable to care for herself because of weakness. But through physical therapy and care, she regained her self-sufficiency and is being discharged in September to an independent apartment at 91心頭 Manor Senior.

Extended Care Administrator Veronica Onwunaka said Sewells outlook and belief in herself and the facility was a big part of her recovery.

She has a very positive attitude and believed in and trusted our care. And together with family support, we were all able to achieve this positive outcome. We believe she will be well in the community, Onwunaka said. It has been a pleasure to have her as a patient.

Sewell is grateful for the care she has received and specifically highlighted her nurse, Maria Cruz.

I can go to talk to her about anything. Shell keep me on the straight and narrow, Sewell said. She just wants me to do better.

The road hasnt always been easy for Sewell. She said there were times, particularly at the start of her recovery, when she wanted to give up. Talking to her four sons kept her going and when she started feeling better, that motivated her to continue with her treatment.

Staff members at Extended Care were also instrumental in her recovery.

This is the best facility Ive been to, Sewell said.

Sewell is a lifelong Newark resident. Three of her sons live in Newark and one is in South Jersey. Her sister and aunt also live in Manor Senior so she has family support nearby to help her as she transitions back to independent living.

At 54 years old, Sewell has had a difficult journey and shes anxious about the transition, but she is happy to be starting the next chapter of her life.

Ive been through a whole lot, but I feel pretty good, she said.

91心頭 Extended Care is a skilled nursing facility located at 266 South Orange Ave., Newark. For more information, visit or call 973-624-2020.

Home Friends Coordinator Has Had Many Roles At NCC /2018/01/home-friends-coordinator-has-had-many-roles-at-ncc/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=home-friends-coordinator-has-had-many-roles-at-ncc /2018/01/home-friends-coordinator-has-had-many-roles-at-ncc/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2018 15:32:49 +0000 http://ncc.qsdintelligence.com/?p=11200
Giselle Oviedo has worked in Security, Human Resources and Social Services for 91心頭 over the past decade. She is currently the Home Friends Coordinator and runs the emergency food pantry.

Giselle Oviedo has spent her entire professional career with 91心頭, serving in a variety of roles over the last decade.

In mid June, she became the Home Friends Coordinator, overseeing six employees that are part of the program, which is funded by Essex County. Home Friends provide Central Ward residents with services not covered by Medicaid, including laundry, meal preparation, food shopping and companionship. Oviedo also runs the emergency food pantry for 91心頭, which is open from the 16th to the end of each month.

Her journey at 91心頭 started in March 2008 when she was 18 years old. Thats when she became a security officer for the organization. After serving in that capacity, she received a call from Human Resources Manager Anna Sing-King asking if she would be interested in working in an administrative role in HR. Oviedo applied and got that position.

In mid 2009, Oviedo went back to school with the help of 91心頭 and received a certificate in business administration. She learned the ins and outs of Human Resources and served as the benefits coordinator.

In 2013, she saw an opening for a care coordinator position at Manor Senior and decided she wanted to make a change and join the Social Services Department. It took a little convincing on her part since she didnt have specific experience in the area of social services, but Oviedo was able to land the job and started as a care coordinator in September 2013.

I loved it from day one, Oviedo said.

She enjoys helping people and overcoming challenging situations. When she was a care coordinator, Oviedo said she had one resident who seemed somewhat cold and distant. She decided to contact her family to see what was going on. It turned out the woman had suffered abuse in the past and had a hard time trusting people and letting them get close to her. Oviedo found out when her birthday was, got her a card and had the other residents on her floor sign it for her. The gesture showed the woman that other people do care and it helped her have more meaningful relationships with her neighbors and staff.

In her current role, Oviedo makes sure residents in need of help get visits from a member of the Home Friends team. She said for some, a Home Friend is the only visitor they have. She also takes pride in running the emergency food pantry, which serves many people who run out of money for food by the middle of the month.

Giselle is always willing to learn new things and embodies what it means to be a team player. She takes pride in her work and sets an example for others and the residents we serve at 91心頭, said Assistant Director of Health and Social Services Donnette Burrowes-Williams.

Oviedo grew up in North Newark and was raised by her father. Her sister is Luz Toro, care coordinator at Douglas Homes. Oviedo lived in 91心頭 properties from 2009 to 2012 before moving back to North Newark. She has two sons, ages 10 and 8.

Oviedo hopes to earn an associates degree in human services and may pursue a bachelors degree as well. But she expects all that to happen while she continues working at 91心頭.

I expect to be here for many more years, she said.
