Remembering Long-Time Harmony House Staffer Angela Hall /2024/05/remembering-long-time-harmony-house-staffer-angela-hall/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=remembering-long-time-harmony-house-staffer-angela-hall /2024/05/remembering-long-time-harmony-house-staffer-angela-hall/#respond Sun, 19 May 2024 19:13:44 +0000 /?p=33048 Angela Hall was a fixture at Harmony House, 91心頭s transitional housing facility for homeless families. She worked for 91心頭 for more than 34 years before her passing on March 27 after a battle with colon cancer.

Her sister Lisa M. Hall-Brown said Hall loved working at Harmony House, particularly with the children there. She would help children with their homework if they were having trouble and led them toward a successful path.

She wanted every young child to look toward college and to further their education, and become good people, Hall-Brown said. She loved those children.

Hall-Brown said there were many success stories attributed to her sister, including a young man who she referred to who now owns a construction company, a woman in recovery for drug addiction who Hall helped find employment and a client who she accompanied to a bank to help open an account.

While Hall didnt have children of her own, Hall-Brown said she was fantastic when working with young people.

She treated everybodys kids like they were her own. She was sweet, she was stern and they respected her, Hall-Brown said. I know she touched so many children. The kids used to come back just to see her.

Harmony House Case Manager Linda Washington worked with Hall for more than 17 years and described her as very knowledgeable and always willing to help in whatever way she could. Washington said Halls work with the youth at Harmony House made a huge difference and when she switched to case management for the adults, she did just as well. Washington said Halls loss has already been felt and she will be greatly missed.

Her clients loved her, Washington said. She was a great person.

Hall was raised in Newark, just blocks away from Harmony House. She worked as a youth counselor in her teenage years, for a time as a nursing aid and later served as a resident counselor at a home for boys. A coworker told her about the employment opportunity at 91心頭 so she applied and was accepted. Hall-Brown said Hall loved working at 91心頭 and made her career there.

Hall also had many skills that her coworkers may not have known about. Hall-Brown said she was an amateur mechanic and also knew how to drive a tractor trailer. She said Hall knew how to do some plumbing and fix almost anything like their father.

Hall-Brown said Hall had a good sense of humor, was loving and was very charitable.

Im going to miss her but she had a good run, Hall-Brown said. She helped people. She wasnt just there.

Radice started her career in domestic violence, working in a safe house. She later served as the Director of , a homeless shelter. She also ran a veteran program in Newark and worked in property management for a decade.

Helping others has always driven Radice. She is a licensed social worker and has lived experience that helps her relate to clients.

I was raised by a single mom of four and when the rent went up, we moved. Depending on the definition of homelessness at the time, we were either considered couch surfers or homeless a lot of times as children, she said. Its always been a passion and something I understood.

91心頭 CEO Simone Gagneron sees Radice as a great asset to Harmony House.

Im thrilled to welcome our newest team member to the 91心頭 family. Carries passion for making a difference and dedication to our mission is truly inspiring, she said. Im confident shell make a significant impact in the lives of those we serve.

Radice enjoys seeing clients improve both their situation and their outlook.

To see their success and to start to believe in themselves. To see the dullness go to a spark, she said of her favorite part of her work.

Radice sees having the entire network of 91心頭 services available for the clients as very beneficial.

Its a concept that should be within every agency that I worked for, she said. To have everything in-house is brilliant.

She also likes the setup of Harmony House since it offers apartments to families with private bathrooms and kitchens, which helps reduce some stress during a time of unrest.

Radice attended county college before earning a bachelors degree from . She then earned a masters degree in social work from . She lived in upstate New York for a short time as a child but has mainly resided in New Jersey, in a variety of counties.

Radice currently lives in Sussex County and has two daughters and a grandson. In her free time, she enjoys playing trivia on a team, playing the tambourine, listening to live music, spending time on the beach in the summer and spending time with her grandson.

Radice sees the work at Harmony House as essential for helping families get back on their feet.

You cant focus on anything else if you dont have a roof over your head, she said.

Harmony House Relocation Case Manager Started as a Volunteer with 91心頭 /2023/06/harmony-house-relocation-case-manager-started-as-a-volunteer-with-new-community/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=harmony-house-relocation-case-manager-started-as-a-volunteer-with-new-community /2023/06/harmony-house-relocation-case-manager-started-as-a-volunteer-with-new-community/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2023 16:27:14 +0000 /?p=24079 Emily Coote has a passion for helping others which she has turned into a career. She first came to 91心頭 as a volunteer while in college, assisting at the Family Resource Success Center. She continued volunteering even after graduation and became a temporary Case Manager at Harmony House, 91心頭s transitional housing facility for homeless families, on July 11, 2022. She was made a full-time employee and currently serves as a Relocation Case Manager at Harmony House.

Coote focuses on finding permanent housing for Harmony House residents in her current role. She goes out in the field to find apartments and researches as much information as possible about subsidized housing, low-income housing, affordable housing and market rent rates in the area. In addition, she provides resources to help clients obtain employment and creates individual service plans for them.

Finding permanent housing that clients can afford is challenging.

Its very difficult because were in an era where the demand is so high but the supply is extremely low, Coote said.

She doesnt let the circumstances discourage her, however. She is continuously looking for ways to help her clients move to self-sufficiency and has helped several move into permanent housing.

Harmony House Director Yonette Fredericks said Coote came to the department with optimism and an eagerness to help clients overcome their barriers to obtaining permanent housing.

Ms. Coote, willing to pitch in wherever she is needed, continues to be a beacon of hope for the clients and, ultimately, her peers, Fredericks said. The Harmony House team is pleased to have such a bright and tenacious Relocation Case Manager who continues to demonstrate the passion and commitment to aiding the fight against homelessness.

Coote has always been passionate about helping others. In her free time, she fed the homeless and hosted clothing drives. She grew fond of 91心頭 and its mission when she began volunteering at the Family Resource Success Center. Director Joann Williams-Swiney suggested that she apply for a job with the organization and provided her with a recommendation.

Emily was and is courteous and kind to every client she encounters. She is straightforward in a respectful way which fosters a connection with the clients she works with. She is a go-getter and a determined young woman who cares about those in her community, Williams-Swiney said. Emily truly embodies the mission of NCC.

Coote decided she wanted a career in social work shortly after starting her post-secondary education at Essex County College. Cootes mother, who passed away when she was born, was a social worker. When she was 19, Coote learned about her mothers career and the passion she had for helping others. She was told firsthand accounts of how her mother had helped people and made a positive difference in their lives. It was then she decided to pursue social work as a career. After , Coote attended and graduated with a major in social work and a minor in women and gender studies.

Coote previously worked at in Summit in an administrative role. After the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she took a job as a tool rental associate at , where she rented out equipment and demonstrated how it worked to customers. She enjoyed the position but wanted to find a role to use her social work degree.

The best part of the job for Coote happens when a client thanks her and understands the services she is providing.

Coote is grateful that Harmony House exists in the area because it offers private space for families, which is rare. Most shelters have communal areas instead of individual units with private kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms.

I tell the clients all day that this shelter is considered the W [Hotel] to any other shelter in this city and in this county, she said.

In addition to privacy, Harmony House residents also have access to all the other services 91心頭 provides, including mental health counseling from Family Service Bureau of Newark (FSB); free tax prep, furniture assistance and energy bill assistance at the Family Resource Success Center; and educational services from .

Coote doesnt limit her contributions at Harmony House to her official duties as a Relocation Case Manager. She also pitches ideas for events that she coordinates if they get approved. Right before Valentines Day she arranged for licensed individuals to provide haircuts and hair braiding for Harmony House children.

I like that Ms. Fredericks allows me to bring in some ideas and actually execute them, she said. It was a real success.
