He is currently enrolled in the Medical Assistant Clinical (MAC) program at 91心頭 Career & Technical Institute (NCCTI) to kickstart his career.

Clement considered joining the U.S. Air Force to become a medical professional but decided to attend NCCTI instead. His older brother previously completed the MAC program at NCCTI and is currently employed at University Hospital in Newark. He urged Clement to enroll at NCCTI because of his positive experience.

Clement, who is 22 years old, is happy with his decision.

Everyone is here to help you, he said of the NCCTI staff. They give you every chance and opportunity to succeed. They help you find the path youre looking for and help you start your career.

He described the atmosphere as being like a family, with staff members offering support with students courses of study as well as help outside of the classroom when needed.

Academically, Clement feels well prepared by his instructor, Dr. Mamdouh Sorial, who he said breaks down all topics to ensure his students understand the material and how to perform procedures in the real world.

He is by far one of the best teachers I ever had, Clement said. He puts students first.

Sorial described Clement as a good student who is always on time, is engaged and completes his work. He said Clement also has a good relationship with everyone and will represent NCCTI well in the workforce.

I believe he will be a great medical assistant, Sorial said.

Student Success Coach Odette Phillip described Clement as a polite, respectful and cooperative student.

He has demonstrated that he is focused on completing the MAC program, she said. Christophers attendance is consistent and he manages his course work remarkably.

NCCTI Director Dr. Sylvia McCray said students like Clement inspire the schools staff members.

Christopher is the example of why NCCTI, its staff, instructors and administrator does what we do, she said. From the start of his program, Chris has stayed steady and focused on his goal. I am very proud of the work we are doing at NCCTI and of the work the team is doing to improve the student experience.

Upon graduation, Clement hopes to find employment at a local medical facility. He also plans to continue his education. While he hasnt decided on an exact degree, he knows he wants it to be within the medical field.

Currently, he enjoys performing EKGs the most because of the wealth of information that can be obtained. He said the chart of the cardiac activity not only shows the patients heartbeat. A trained technician can also determine if the patient has eaten, is thirsty or has been smoking, as well as other factors that could be affecting the heart.

Clement, who lives in East Orange, is on his way to achieving his goal of working in medicine. He is slated to complete the MAC program by the end of January.

NCCTI is an accredited post-secondary career and technical institution that is currently enrolling for the following programs: Automotive Technician, Building Trades Specialist, Medical Assistant Clinical, Patient Care Technician and Culinary Arts Specialist. NCCTI also operates a comprehensive Financial Opportunity Center and Bridges to Career Opportunities Program sponsored by the local and national Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) offices. Four Decades of Service: Madge Wilson Continues to Fulfill 91心頭s Mission /2021/07/four-decades-of-service-madge-wilson-continues-to-fulfill-new-communitys-mission/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=four-decades-of-service-madge-wilson-continues-to-fulfill-new-communitys-mission /2021/07/four-decades-of-service-madge-wilson-continues-to-fulfill-new-communitys-mission/#respond Mon, 12 Jul 2021 15:44:05 +0000 https://72375d9a61.nxcli.io/?p=19088 Its extremely rare to find an individual who has dedicated more than four decades of their career to one organization. But anyone familiar with 91心頭 knows Madge Wilson who has been a constant at the organization for more than 41 years.

Wilson met the late Monsignor William J. Linder, founder of 91心頭, at Queen of Angels parish in 1962 where he was first assigned after graduating from the seminary and becoming an ordained priest. After he and other community members started 91心頭 in 1968, Wilson became involved. She was one of the founding members of Babyland Nursery, which provided childcare services, in 1969. After 91心頭 constructed housing, Wilson officially joined NCC as an employee in 1980, becoming a member of the Property Management Department as a manager for family and senior housing. She previously worked for the Newark Housing Authority from 1964 to 1980 so she had experience in that area.

Over the last four decades, Wilson has helped people in more ways than just through her official job responsibilities. While working in the Property Management Department, she began the annual Christmas drive, which she still does today. She arranges for the collection of holiday gifts for children from a variety of sources, including Catholic schools, churches and individual donors, and distributes them to families in need connected to 91心頭 and Saint Rose of Lima Church, where she has been a member since 1974, when Monsignor Linder began serving as pastor there. She also distributes donated turkeys to families in need for Thanksgiving to ensure they have a festive holiday meal.

Wilson works with the National Council of Jewish Women Essex County (NCJW/Essex) to ensure 91心頭 and Saint Rose of Lima families are able to participate in the organizations annual Back 2 School Store, which takes place each summer. It provides school supplies, shoes, clothing, winter coats and toiletries to county residents in need who are identified by area organizations.

In addition to the annual events, Wilson also helps 91心頭 residents furnish their apartments if necessary. She will arrange for pick up and drop off of donated furniture to make the units truly feel like home.

Since becoming an NCC employee, she has worked to help secure housing for military veterans, many who have been on the brink of homelessness. She has worked with members of the Veterans Administration Hospital in East Orange and Lyons to ensure veterans have a safe place to go upon discharge.

Madge Wilson, center, was presented with a service award during 91心頭s 50th Anniversary Gala in 2018 by current Board Member Diane Johnson and 91心頭 CEO Richard Rohrman.

Wilson said she came to 91心頭 to work for the people who needed it most and that goal hasnt changed.

There were so many poor people and thats who I try to help, poor people that need help, she said. I said when I came to work for 91心頭 that I would never leave and that I just wanted to be able to help people. To make a difference in their lives. And Ive done that.

Now Wilson serves as 91心頭s Outreach Coordinator and is a long-time member of the organizations Board of Directors. At 88 years old, she has no plans to retire.

Im staying busy and thats what keeps me going, she said. My satisfaction is helping people. Thats my mission.

Her hard work and dedication are well-known to 91心頭 residents, staff members and fellow board members.

Madge Wilson is one of those rare individuals. Shes an embodiment of what NCC stands for, which is service and commitment to the community from the young to the elderly, said 91心頭 Board Chairman Dr. A. Zachary Yamba. But more importantly, she does it with such grace and joy that its really a testament to her deep and abiding faith in people.

Wilson has had her own set of personal trials, including health challenges, but she has never let anything stop her from serving others.

After Monsignor Linder, there is no one who encapsulates the NCC mission more than Madge. She has worked tirelessly for the people of Newark every day for over 41 years. Madge works one-on-one with people and it is incredible to think of the sheer number of people Madge has impacted over this long life of service to others. From children to seniors she has been there for everyone, said 91心頭 CEO Richard Rohrman. Madge was also dedicated to helping Monsignor Linder through his health issues and went to the Extended Care Facility every night after work until late to be with him so that he always had company. She is the definition of kindness. You could not ask for a better person to be on your side than Madge. I have been lucky to have known and been inspired by my friend for 40 of these years.

Wilson has been recognized on numerous occasions for her work by other organizations as well. She was honored as an Essex County Legend by the Essex County Division of Senior Services in 2010, received a letter of recognition from President Barack Obama in 2011, was named Volunteer of the Year for her efforts on behalf of long-term care residents by the Health Care Association of New Jersey in 2016 and received the Saint Vincent Academy Woman of Distinction Award in 2017.

While she is grateful for the accolades, Wilson said she doesnt expect or need recognition. She simply wants to do the work that needs to be done to fulfill 91心頭s mission: to help residents of inner cities improve the quality of their lives to reflect individual God-given dignity and personal achievement.

The love that I have for 91心頭 is unspeakable, she said. This is my home.

Derek White joined the NCC family as the Security Operations Manager on June 1. White was a longtime member of the Newark Police Department, retiring after about 31 years of service, and he also has experience supervising unarmed security guards for a company in New York.

We are very happy to have Derek White join 91心頭 as the new Security Operations Manager, said 91心頭 Chief Operating Officer Fred Hunter. Derek is a retired lieutenant from the Newark Police Department and brings his vast knowledge of law enforcement and public safety.

During his tenure with the Newark Police Department, White worked in several investigative units, including robbery squad, the sexual assault unit and internal affairs. He also worked patrol, the taxi unit and the executive protection unit. After retiring from the department, he made the move to a security company in New York as a supervisor.

White applied to the position with 91心頭 to bring him closer to home. He hopes to make a difference in his new role.

My intentions are just to use my knowledge and the experience that Ive gotten from the police department and from life in general and try to make some type of impact as far as making things safer and also continuing what my predecessor started, he said. My goal is to just keep the positivity going.

White has a long history in Newark, both personally and professionally. His grandfather came to Newark in the 1950s and operated a cleaners business in the city, his father served as a Newark police officer for 26 years, his mother taught in Newark for 28 years and his sister is currently a teacher for the Newark Public Schools.

White was born in East Orange and lived in Newark until he was in first grade. His parents then moved to Plainfield, where he attended elementary school and junior high school. He graduated from Seton Hall Prep for high school and attended a couple of years of college, but wasnt excelling. His father gave him the application for the police exam and encouraged him to pursue a career in law enforcement, which he did.

He started the police academy in October 1989 and finished in March 1990. He officially retired from the Newark Police Department in February 2020.

White is currently a Newark resident and has been in the same home since 1996. He is familiar with 91心頭 from his time in the city and working in the police department. His mothers aunt also lived at Gardens Senior for a time.

In his spare time, White likes to travel, ride his bicycle and go to the gym. He has a son and a stepdaughter.

New Food Service Director Brings Wealth of Experience to 91心頭 /2021/07/new-food-service-director-brings-wealth-of-experience-to-new-community/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-food-service-director-brings-wealth-of-experience-to-new-community /2021/07/new-food-service-director-brings-wealth-of-experience-to-new-community/#respond Mon, 12 Jul 2021 15:42:31 +0000 https://72375d9a61.nxcli.io/?p=19099 91心頭 has a new Food Service Director stationed at Extended Care Facility. Nelson Gibson joined 91心頭 on June 7 and has jumped right into the role. He comes with an extensive background in food service and hopes to make a positive difference in the lives of Extended Care residents.

Nelson Gibson has worked in the nursing facility food service area for over 15 years and we are pleased with his addition to our Food Service Department at Extended Care, said 91心頭 Chief Operating Officer Fred Hunter.

Extended Care Administrator Veronica Onwunaka is also happy with the decision to bring Gibson on board.

He is making such a great impact with his professionalism and his commitment to what we are doing. He is showing that he is a doer, not an observer, she said.

One of the first projects Gibson is taking on is building a new four-week cycle menu for Extended Care residents. The menu will include three well-balanced meals per day that fit into guidelines for different therapeutic diets. He plans to take residents input into account and make adjustments accordingly.

Sometimes in a setting like this, the only thing you have choices over is what you eat for the day. And if I can make that pleasurable and enjoyable for the residents here, then I feel like Ive done my lifes work, so to speak, and what I came here for, Gibson said.

In addition to crafting the menu for residents, Gibson is also in charge of managing staff and ordering for Extended Care, NCCs early learning centers and summer programs and the 91心頭 Career & Technical Institute Culinary Arts Specialist program.

Gibson became involved in food service after high school. He was living in Piscataway and enrolled in a culinary program at Middlesex County College, which he enjoyed. He continued his education at New York Restaurant School, where he earned his culinary degree. From there, he worked in corporate dining for 16 years as the executive chef to the CEO of AT&T in Bedminster.

He didnt feel fully fulfilled so he took the advice of a friend who was a dietician and accepted a position as a supervisor at a nursing home in East Orange.

It kind of filled that void because you got to see what you were doing and how it made a difference for people, Gibson said. I was raised by my grandparents. Every resident reminded me of my grandparents and I wanted them to be treated with respect and dignity.

Gibson was laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic after serving as the Food Service Director at St. Josephs Healthcare and Rehab Center for 17 years. In his job search, he said he was looking for a long-term opportunity where he could make a difference in peoples lives.

Im not the kind of person that jumps from job to job, Gibson said. I want to be in a place where I can make a difference and see the difference that Im making.

Gibson lives in East Orange with his wife of three years. He has four sons ranging in age from 19 to 30. In his spare time, he enjoys camping, bowling and motorcycle riding.

He looks forward to growing his career at 91心頭.

Im enjoying my time here so far, he said.

91心頭 Career & Technical Institute Welcomes Two New Instructors /2021/02/new-community-career-technical-institute-welcomes-two-new-instructors/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-community-career-technical-institute-welcomes-two-new-instructors /2021/02/new-community-career-technical-institute-welcomes-two-new-instructors/#respond Fri, 12 Feb 2021 21:49:45 +0000 https://www.newcommunity.org/?p=17923 91心頭 Career & Technical Institute (NCCTI) has two new members of its teaching staff: Yusto Awich, who is an alumnus of the school, took on the role of Building Trades Specialist instructor in September while Dr. Mamdouh Sorial became the instructor for the Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) program in December.

NCCTI is pleased to have Dr. Sorial and Mr. Awich join our team. Both come with industry-specific skills and teaching experience, said NCCTI Director Rodney Brutton. Our students will benefit greatly from their knowledge and will certainly be well prepared to enter the workforce from a theoretical and practical perspective.

Awich graduated from the schools Building Trades Specialist program in 2017 and after graduation started his own general construction business. Before enrolling at NCCTI, he was a New York City school teacher for about 10 years, teaching biology and sciences.

After William Robinson, who served as his Building Trades Specialist instructor, retired, Awich decided to go back to teaching in his new field.

I saw the training that I got and I thought it would be a good time to come back and provide the same training that I got, Awich said. And also being that Im a former teacher, I said this is another good way of giving back and combining skills.

He started teaching NCCTIs Building Trades students in September and enjoys the position. He still has his construction business for weekend projects, but he is now concentrating on his full-time role as an educator.

Sorial has an extensive background in the medical field. He worked in neuropsychiatry in his home country of Egypt before moving to the United States in 1997. When he came to this country, he was unable to find a residency so he decided to become a medical instructor. He has worked in many institutes of higher learning including Eastwick College in Nutley and National Career Institute in East Orange.

He knew his predecessor, Dr. Seham Abouelhassan, as well as NCCTIs Patient Care Technician instructor Dr. Maha Koltowski, before coming on board which helped the transition go smoothly. He began teaching CMA students in December.

Sorial stresses the importance of students getting a certification instead of working jobs without room for growth.

It is very good that we get people certified so they can have a real career, he said. It will open a lot of doors for work or for other education.

Sorial feels comfortable at NCCTI and is happy to work with his colleagues and students.

Its a very nice place with very nice people, he said. I like this environment.

Both instructors started working at NCCTI in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made some changes to instruction. Students and staff members are required to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing. Because of class size, Sorials students come in person two days per week and he provides assignments for them to complete on the three days they stay home. Sorial said the split schedule can be a challenge, but he and the students are making it work.

Several of Sorials students have accepted temporary positions at University Hospital where they administer COVID-19 vaccines at the hospitals Ambulatory Care Center.

Awich said all the programs at NCCTI help students establish a successful career.

These types of skills really will set them up for jobs, he said.

NCCTI is an accredited post-secondary career and technical institution that offers the following programs: Automotive Technician, Diesel Technician, Building Trades Specialist, Clinical Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, Community Healthcare Worker, Culinary Arts Specialist and Business and Computer Technologies. Elizabeth Brookins worked as the Director of Activities at Extended Care for more than 26 years. She passed away Jan. 4 at the age of 78.

91心頭 Extended Care Facility has lost a longtime staff member. Director of Activities Elizabeth Brookins passed away Jan. 4 at the age of 78.
Brookins began working at Extended Care in 1992 and was well-known in the facility. Her work involved coordinating all activity programs for residents. She created the monthly calendar and coordinated with area houses of worship to make sure the spiritual needs of residents were also met. She took her role seriously, but she didnt limit herself to just doing what was in her job description.
She was a big advocate for residents, staff, family members, visitors and volunteers, said Extended Care Administrator Veronica Onwunaka. Anyone who came through that door into Extended Care, she reached out to.
Her kindness extended to all levels of 91心頭.
Elizabeth Brookins, Ms. Liz to me, brought joy and happiness into the Extended Care Facility with her every time she passed through the door, said 91心頭 CEO Richard Rohrman. Every time I walked in and she was in the little store, I got a great big smile and a hello. I looked forward to it. It was a small thing but it really gave me a lift. I can only imagine what she meant to the patients she worked with. Ms. Liz shared her joy with us for over 26 years. Lucky us!
Onwunaka said Brookins was a team player who was dedicated to her work at the nursing home. Brookins spent much of her time at Extended Care, even when she wasnt scheduled to work. Onwunaka said she cared deeply about the residents and the vision of 91心頭 as a whole.
The mission was always in her mind and she carried it to the last day, Onwunaka said. She never forgot the residents, our staff and everyone that she touched. Her energy was beyond human imagination.
Brookins was born and raised in Sandersville, Ga. and she was one of nine siblings. Her son William Brookins said she moved to New Jersey, where she met his father and had him, her only child. She lived in East Orange for 52 years, up until her passing.
William described his mother as a very caring, giving and welcoming person.
She was always inviting. People were always able to come over to my house and hang out. I was the hang out place because of her, William said. That was her nature. She was just a good, giving, caring person.
He also said she loved working at Extended Care.
She was there all the time. Six, seven days a week, he said. I used to get on her about it because she was always there, but she loved it so I backed off. That was her life, that job. For the residents.
Extended Care will host a Celebration of Life in honor of Elizabeth Brookins Thursday, Feb. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the facility, located at 266 South Orange Ave., Newark.

Essex County Dedicates Plaque to NCC Founder Along Legends Way /2018/10/essex-county-dedicates-plaque-to-ncc-founder-along-legends-way/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=essex-county-dedicates-plaque-to-ncc-founder-along-legends-way /2018/10/essex-county-dedicates-plaque-to-ncc-founder-along-legends-way/#respond Mon, 29 Oct 2018 15:12:35 +0000 http://newcommunity.org/?p=12019

91心頭 Founder Monsignor William J. Linder will forever be remembered along Legends Way near the Essex County Government Complex. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo and the Board of Chosen Freeholders held a dedication of memorial plaques honoring Monsignor Linder and Newark author Philip Roth Oct. 12. Both men passed away this year.

During the afternoon event, county officials and people connected to 91心頭 spoke about Monsignor Linder, the depth of his work, the influence he had on Newark and how he was personally.

NCC Board President Dr. A. Zachary Yamba talked about how he met Monsignor Linder in 1963 when he was a student at Seton Hall University and Monsignor Linder was the pastor at Queen of Angels Church. Their friendship lasted for more than five decades and after Yamba retired from being president of Essex County College, he joined the NCC Board of Directors at Monsignor Linders request.

Yamba said while Monsignor Linder wasnt a native Newarker, he did more for the city than anyone after the Summer Disorders of 1967.

All you have to do is look outside the confines of county government and you can see the footprints of Monsignor Linder, Yamba said. We will be eternally grateful for this man who has worked so hard. And so the obligation that he has left us with is to carry on his legacy so that which he built will not have been done in vain.

91心頭 CEO Richard Rohrman talked about how Monsignor Linder changed peoples lives through a holistic approach.

He was a big dreamer but he also had a persistence and he had a determination to turn those dreams into reality, Rohrman said. He was really the most persistent and effective advocate for the people in the city of Newark.

Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura talked about Monsignor Linders persistence, saying he could be relentless but it was for the right reasons.

He never stopped articulating on behalf of the people that he served. Thats what was so admirable about him, Fontoura said. He was so passionate about serving the folks that needed to be served the most. His legacy will live on forever.

Former Director of Operations for 91心頭 Raymond Codey shared several stories about Monsignor Linder and how he fought for the people of Newark from the very beginning of his assignment at Queen of Angels Church in the city. Three weeks after he became the church pastor, the Summer Disorders happened.

In an effort to control the situation, then Gov. Richard Hughes sent in the State Police and National Guard who set up a perimeter along the boundaries of Newark. This cut off the food supply for residents. Monsignor Linder convinced a bakery in East Orange to give him a truck and got permission from Gov. Hughes to drive that truck in and out of the city.

He ordered milk, water, vegetables and bread and walked the projects right next to the parish. He did that for seven days. These were like 15-story buildings, no elevator service. He walked door to door, floor to floor, seven days delivering food, Codey said. And he built up a tremendous following in the community because of that.

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo said he worked for Steve Adubato at the time when Monsignor Linder founded 91心頭.

Steve started the North Ward Center to say, Were going to be part of the community, DiVincenzo said. Monsignor Linder did the same thing with 91心頭, dealing with the less fortunate. He was the man who spoke up.

Though he said the two didnt get along, he was able to bring them together to work out their differences.

Theres only one Steve Adubato and one Monsignor Linder, but they were both doing the same thing: trying to help people in the city of Newark, DiVincenzo said.

Sen. Teresa Ruiz called Monsignor Linder a giant, a legacy builder who really created fundamental core principles of improving the quality of life for people either in a moment in time, for an extended moment in time or for their entire lifespan.

Essex County Freeholder President Brendan Gill said Monsignor Linders contributions to society enhanced the legacy of Newark.

During a time of tremendous upheaval and despair, he became a favorite son of Newark by taking that despair and turning it into hope, Gill said.

Those interested in viewing the plaque can walk along Legends Way near the Essex County Government Complex.

Samaya Hutchinson is participating in the Certified Medical Assistant program at 91心頭 Workforce Development Center. She hopes to one day become a registered nurse.

Having a full-time job while going to school is never easy, but it becomes even more of a challenge when youre working nights and attending classes during the day. Thats what Samaya Hutchinson is doing to complete the Certified Medical Assistant program at 91心頭 Workforce Development Center.
Hutchinson works as a certified home health aide at Brighton Gardens, Sunrise Senior Living in West Orange from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. She also works Saturday afternoons and sometimes Sunday. She attends class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week.
Getting very little sleep hasnt deterred the 21-year-old.
Its hard but I push myself because I want more for myself, she said. I want to finance myself so I dont have to depend on my parents.
Hutchinson moved to East Orange last year from Jamaica. She lives with her mother, stepfather, three sisters and two brothers.
She has wanted to work in the health care field since she was about 6 years old, when her grandmother passed away. Because I didnt have the chance to help her, I wanted to be a nurse, Hutchinson said.
