One of those students who is enjoying success is Samad Sharrief who is currently employed as a diesel technician.

Sharrief first enrolled in the Automotive Technician program at NCCTI, which he completed in 2017. To increase his earning potential, he returned to NCCTI as part of its first Diesel Technician class, which he completed in 2019. Sharrief is now working as a diesel technician for Penske in Dayton, N.J., where he performs preventive maintenance and repairs on trucks as well as smaller vehicles.

Samad is a talented technician. He came to NCCTI with a great attitude to learn and an innate ability to work with his hands, said NCCTI Director Rodney Brutton. Samad refined his mechanical skills in both our Automotive and Diesel Technician training programs, which has led him to this wonderful opportunity with Penske as a diesel technician. We are proud of Samad and he is certainly one of many shining stars at NCCTI.

Sharrief decided to pursue a career in vehicle repair because he has always been interested in cars and was good with his hands. He worked at a bike shop when he was 10 years old and learned how to fix bicycles, mopeds and dirt bikes.

I always enjoyed working on stuff, Sharrief said. The fact that I could do what I like and also make a decent amount of money doing it was what drew me in.

Sharrief attended a vocational high school where he was first introduced to an automotive program. He was unable to finish the program, however, because he started it during his senior year. After high school, he attended Union County College for about a year but left in order to work to make money. He realized after entering the workforce that without an additional degree or certificate, it would be difficult to earn a living wage.

His mother showed him an article about NCCTIs Automotive Technician program and he decided to inquire about it. When he called, the new class was starting the next day. School personnel encouraged him to bring his required documents that day and he was able to be in class right away.

Sharrief did well in the program and upon graduation, he worked as an automotive technician for Toyota at Sansone Automall.

Samad was a very good student. He was diligent. He came every day, said Lead Automotive Technician Instructor John Zaccheus. Hes full of respect.

When Sharrief learned that NCCTI was offering the Diesel Technician program, he decided to return to school to increase his earning potential. Those working in the diesel industry have the opportunity to earn higher salaries than those in automotive.

Being certified as both an automotive and diesel technician has helped Sharrief because he is more attractive to employers since he is able to work on a greater variety of vehicles. His additional certification led to him finding employment that offered a higher wage, which is beneficial, especially since he is married and has two children.

Even while he was enrolled at NCCTI, Sharrief was able to work in the industry thanks to connections the school provided. While it wasnt always easy being in class during the day and working in the evening, Sharrief was grateful to have the opportunity to gain experience and earn a paycheck.

Everything was relatable to what I was learning. And going straight to work from school, we would do things we just learned about, he said.

Sharrief is now making a good salary and is part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union.

It was a great experience, he said of NCCTI.

Sharrief said he got support from school personnel beyond what is typically expected. If he was late to class, even by five minutes, he would get a phone call to see where he was.

You could be late every day and theyll call you to make sure you get to school, he said.

Sharrief hopes more people take advantage of the programs NCCTI offers to improve their financial situations and ultimately their lives.

The road to that career path has taken some time, but thanks to 91心頭 and her hard work, she has achieved her goal.

Ampiaw first came to the United States from Ghana in August 2017. She moved to Newark with her grandfather and enrolled in 91心頭s Adult Learning Center. After successfully completing English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Levels 1 and 2 and the High School Equivalency (HSE) course, she enrolled in the Diesel Technician program at 91心頭 Career & Technical Institute (NCCTI), where she learned the skills necessary to become both a diesel and automotive technician.

She graduated from the program in March 2020 just as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold on the area. Despite that challenge, Ampiaw began her job search and didnt give up. Her persistence paid off. Staff at NCCTI helped arrange an interview with Bridgestone-Firestone and she was hired as an automotive technician at the Linden location in January 2021.

Maa Efia is a very hardworking and determined young lady who epitomizes what 91心頭 can provide through our organizational comprehensive services, said NCCTI Director Rodney Brutton. She earned her high school diploma through our Adult Learning Center, received excellent vocational skills training through our Diesel Technician program and was able to connect to a nice job opportunity with Bridgestone-Firestone Automotive Repair Center to start her career in the automotive and diesel industry.

In her role, Ampiaw has a variety of responsibilities, including fixing tires and performing oil changes. She enjoys the work and the atmosphere at her job.

If you dont understand something, they are there to help and you learn more, she said. Everybody helps each other.

Staff members at Bridgestone-Firestone are happy to have her on board.

Maa has been a wonderful addition to our team here at Firestone in Linden, N.J. She has a terrific attitude which makes it easy to work with her, said Store Manager Shane Allen. Maa is dependable, punctual and very eager to learn, all attributes which will bring her success now and throughout her career in the automotive industry.

The world of professional technicians is dominated by men, but that hasnt stopped Ampiaw from pursuing her dream. She is the only female at her current job, but she hopes more women enter the field if they are passionate about it.

Sometimes its tough because everywhere you look, there are guys, she said. I pray that it will change. When I was at NCCTI, there were four females. I had three in my class and one in the auto class.

Ampiaws advice for others is for them to follow their dreams and work hard.

Whatever youre doing, give it 100 percent, she said.

She has followed her own advice. Maureen Cooper was her instructor at the Adult Learning Center, teaching an all-inclusive HSE class, and knew Ampiaw could accomplish her goals.

Maa Efia entered my classroom with a friendly smile and a whisper but by the end of the class session, she was a strong positive force, Cooper said. When she returned for the second session, she was on a mission; get her HSE Diploma, get a skill and get a good-paying job. It was never a question of if, just when.

Brutton believes that this is the first step in what will be a successful career for Ampiaw, citing her work ethic and mechanical skills that she learned from NCCTI instructors John Zaccheus and Winston Thomas.

The opportunity at Bridgestone-Firestone is just the beginning of Maa Efias long-term career in the automotive repair industry, Brutton said. Shes destined for greatness.

Ampiaw is grateful for the education she received at both the Adult Learning Center and NCCTI. She also took advantage of 91心頭s Financial Opportunity Center where Financial Coach Tamara Brown helped her set and achieve financial goals. Ampiaw recommends 91心頭 programs and services to others.

I really thank them for helping me achieve my dream, she said. And theyre still there for me no matter the circumstances.

NCCTI Graduate Thriving in Diesel Field /2020/01/nccti-graduate-thriving-in-diesel-field/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nccti-graduate-thriving-in-diesel-field /2020/01/nccti-graduate-thriving-in-diesel-field/#respond Tue, 07 Jan 2020 10:59:58 +0000 http://ncc.qsdintelligence.com/?p=13559 Ingrid Simeon was part of the first Diesel Technician class at 91心頭 Career & Technical Institute (NCCTI). Upon graduation in 2019, she secured a job as an entry level technician at HFI Truck Center in Mountainside, an Isuzu dealership and repair facility.

Simeon went on a tour of HFI Truck Center with her class and made an impression.

What I noticed right away about Ingrid is that she has the desire to learn, said HFI Truck Center Service Manager Tim Brennan. We could use three more people like Ingrid.

Simeon enjoys working at HFI Truck Center. While she said it can be a little intimidating being the only female technician, she has found her coworkers are helpful and work together as a team.

You learn something new every day. Its always something different. So its never the same thing. Thats whats good about it, Simeon said.

Simeon is an Essex County resident who attended an open house at NCCTI before enrolling in the Diesel Technician program. She was always interested in cars and when she learned about the schools Diesel Technician program, she decided to pursue a career in that area. Its a decision she is happy with.

I love this field, she said.

Simeon is the type of student NCCTI likes to have. She was serious about her studies and starting her career.

We are extremely proud of Ingrid. Shes a living testament to what hard work, perseverance and a commitment to success looks like, said NCCTI Director Rodney Brutton. Ingrid, while completing her studies at NCCTI, held an overnight job but still maintained excellent attendance and gained the technical skills that enabled her to have the opportunity at HFI Truck Center.

The relationship between NCCTI and HFI Truck Center is relatively new. It started with an online search. Brennan took a trip to a training center in Maplewood that he didnt know had closed. Since he was already out, he searched online for a nearby facility and found NCCTI. He drove to the NCCTI Training Center at 210 West Bigelow St., Newark, and liked what he saw.

I drove there and I walked into the shop and realized its a clean, nice environment and like a working shop. Everybody there was great, Brennan said. Thats where it started.

Brennan invited the Diesel Technician class to HFI Truck Center so students could see the operation and get a sense of a real world facility. Thats when he first met Simeon.

HFI Truck Center Service Advisor Myshka Simeus was the first one to notice Simeon during the class visit and pointed her out to Brennan. Simeon said having another female on the staff, even though she wasnt directly working on vehicles, provided some comfort.

While Simeus doesnt currently work on vehicles, she has a background in all aspects. She hopes more females enter the field, which tends to be male dominated.

Ive worked in parts department, service, working on cars, warranty administrator, everything. For Ingrid and possibly other females who want to get in the field, they shouldnt shy away from it because of misconceptions that they may have, Simeus said. They need to just jump into it.

Because of the positive experience with Simeon, Brennan said he looks forward to working more with NCCTI and hiring additional students, both from the Diesel Technician and Automotive Technician programs.

We extend thanks to Tim and his team at HFI Truck Center for partnering with NCCTI and creating the opportunity for Ingrid, Brutton said. Our success is based on employer partners and were proud to have a relationship with HFI Truck Center.

HFI Truck Center is well established in the industry. It has been in operation for 90 years, first in Union and then moving to its current Mountainside location in the 1940s. It is a family run business that focuses on customer service and has a one repair at a time mentality.

The diesel field is in great need of technicians, particularly in New Jersey which is a main port.

I tell all the new people that come in, I say, once your value increases, we need you. You dont need us, Brennan said. And thats the truth.

NCCTI Offers Paid Apprenticeship Opportunities to Automotive and Diesel Students /2019/09/nccti-offers-paid-apprenticeship-opportunities-to-automotive-and-diesel-students/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nccti-offers-paid-apprenticeship-opportunities-to-automotive-and-diesel-students /2019/09/nccti-offers-paid-apprenticeship-opportunities-to-automotive-and-diesel-students/#respond Tue, 03 Sep 2019 19:19:26 +0000 http://newcommunity.org/?p=13066
91心頭 Career & Technical Institute (NCCTI), in partnership with the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers (NJ CAR), Newark Mayor Ras Barakas Office and the Newark Alliance, is offering paid apprenticeship opportunities in the automotive and diesel technician fields.
In addition to receiving classroom and hands-on instruction at the NCCTI Training Center, students will have the opportunity to receive industry specific training at area dealerships while being paid at least $15 per hour for their work.
NCCTI is on the cutting edge of establishing apprenticeship opportunities in the automotive and diesel sectors, said NCCTI Director Rodney Brutton. We are proud to partner with NJ CAR, the city of Newark and the Newark Alliance for this initiative.
NJ CAR, a nonprofit organization serving franchised new car and truck retailers throughout New Jersey, received a $1 million grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor to provide paid apprenticeships. The organization identified NCCTI as a feeder program for Essex County.
NJ CAR looks forward to the opportunity to work with NCC to help develop and connect NCC talent to the dealerships throughout the region offering good paying jobs and rewarding careers as automotive technicians, said NJ CAR President Jim Appleton. Car dealerships are uniquely local businesses and the jobs they offer come with great pay, benefits and, most importantly, cant be outsourced to the Sun Belt or shipped overseas.
The funding is part of an expansion of apprenticeship opportunities in the state of New Jersey. These types of programs lead to life-sustaining wages, clearly defined career pathways and lifelong self-sufficiency. Gov. Phil Murphy held a press conference in February announcing $2.8 million in grant money for apprenticeship programs statewide. NCCTI staff members and students participated in that press conference, held at Sansone Auto Mall.
To highlight the paid apprenticeship opportunities, NCCTI hosted an Information Session July 31 at its Training Center, where automotive and diesel instruction takes place. Prospective students, as well as newly enrolled individuals, learned more about the Automotive Technician and Diesel Technician programs the accredited school offers and how they would have the opportunity to earn money for their work while still attending classes.
NJ CAR Director of Automotive Workforce Development Breanna Datello Esquilin spoke to attendees about the grant money for the paid apprenticeship opportunities and explained the skills they learn at NCCTI are and will be in high demand.
Over the next seven years, New Jersey new car dealerships will need 12,500 new bodies to replace those leaving or retiring. Theres only about 1,200 students in the state of New Jersey enrolled in some kind of automotive training program, she said. If you can master this trade, the opportunities available to you are limitless.
Rich Liebler, who helped start the Automotive Technician program with 91心頭 and Ford Motor Company, also spoke at the Information Session. Liebler previously owned Hillside Auto Mall on Route 22 and currently serves as Chief Administrative Officer and Veteran Coordinator for Sansone Auto Group. He explained that technicians can quickly rise on the pay scale by completing on-the-job training and could make $91,000 per year in five years.
He also told attendees not to get intimidated by the size of the textbooks.
What youre getting here is an overall knowledge of the automobile. But dont let it overwhelm you to think that you cant do it. Because as you come to me, I train you a little piece at a time, Liebler said. You run into a level where you dont want to go further, thats fine.
Students in the Automotive Technician and Diesel Technician programs are eligible for paid apprenticeship opportunities after they have learned some basic skills and have a good attendance record. Brutton said that usually takes about four and a half months. The hours worked at the apprenticeship also count toward the program hours since it is related training.

91心頭s accredited post-secondary school has a new name: 91心頭 Career and Technical Institute (NCCTI), along with a new website and additional course offerings.
NCCTI has a new name, new energy and new look. It has been rebranded to speak more to the direct access to career and technical education services, said NCCTI Director Rodney Brutton. The new website design puts greater emphasis on the quality education and job placement services for graduates.
The schools website can be accessed at . It offers an in-depth look at course offerings, supportive programs and services, admissions information and the latest news from the school. Those interested in enrolling can fill out an intake form on the website. NCCTI staff members will reach out to prospective students and help them navigate the application and financial aid process. The school offers open enrollment so students can apply any time.
Although the school, previously called 91心頭 Workforce Development Center, has undergone changes, it continues to offer excellent programs and continues to have strong employer partnerships across all industry sectors. This leads to a high graduation and job placement rate. In 2018, NCCTI had a 78 percent graduation rate and a 74 percent job placement rate.
There is so much happening at 91心頭 Career and Technical Institute focused on up-to-date training for in-demand jobs. If we graduate you, you will be working in short order, said 91心頭 CEO Richard Rohrman. Check out the new website, come visit and talk to the staff and students. NCCTI is on the move.
91心頭 Career and Technical Institute offers a variety of programs, including the Automotive Technician program, which is sponsored by Ford Motor Company.

NCCTI is growing and is always looking to expand course offerings to meet employment needs and trends. The school began offering its Diesel Technician program in 2018 and will begin another new program later this year titled Community Healthcare Workers Training Program. That program will prepare individuals to serve as facilitators, advocates and professionals, linking health care and related social services with affected recipients in the Greater Newark community. Program content will include instruction in public and community health, human and social services, health services administration, group counseling, health education, group advocacy, cross-cultural and multilingual communication.
This is an exciting time for NCCTI, Brutton said.
NCCTI is the only accredited post-secondary career and technical school in Newark. It is accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE), a nonprofit organization that grants institutional accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. As an accredited school, NCCTI students are eligible for Title IV financial aid funds, which includes Pell grants.
NCCTI programs are very affordable compared to competitors. The school has a Financial Aid Manager that helps students through the process of applying for financial aid, filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and answering any questions they may have.
NCCTI students get hands-on training in their field of study. Students in the Patient Care Technician program receive instruction from Maha Koltowski.

School instructors are well educated and have experience in their area of expertise. NCCTI provides quality facilities for staff and students at three sites. The Main Campus is at 274 South Orange Ave., Newark, and houses administrative offices, a computer lab, a health care lab and classroom space for health care and business programs. The Training Center at 210 West Bigelow St., Newark, provides classroom and hands-on training space for students in Automotive Technician, Diesel Technician and Building Trades Specialist programs. Culinary Arts students have use of a commercial kitchen at 266 South Orange Ave., Newark.
Brutton believes the changes will bolster NCCTIs profile in the community.
The purpose of rebranding with the new name is to help us reach a wider audience of job seekers and employers, Brutton said.

Students and staff members of 91心頭 Career and Technical Institute (NCCTI) were invited to participate in a press conference held by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy where he announced grant money being allocated for paid apprenticeship programs.

One recipient of the Growing Apprenticeships in Non-Traditional Sectors (GAINS) grant is Sansone Auto Mall, which hosted the press conference Feb. 11 at its Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM dealership in Avenel. NCCTI has a longstanding partnership with Sansone Auto Mall and some if its Automotive and Diesel Technician students will benefit from the apprenticeship program.

Classroom and practical instruction at our Training Center will be combined with related training and automotive assignments at Sansone Auto Mall, said NCCTI Director Rodney Brutton. Our students will be paid and have more direct access to a quality career opportunity.

91心頭 CEO Richard Rohrman sees the apprenticeship program as a way to help NCCTI students both further their careers and allow them to more easily complete training.

At NCC, we know the value of an internship as part of a well-rounded automotive or diesel technicians training. They are a part of our program already but now the students will be able to earn as they learn. It really helps our students who have to struggle with supporting themselves during training, Rohrman said. I cant overstate the value this has.

Murphy explained at the press event that Sansone is receiving $440,000 to create 35 apprenticeship opportunities in the coming year. He said 13 entry-level Sansone employees will benefit, as well as 22 others, which will come from other programs like NCCTI. Overall, $2.8 million were awarded through the GAINS grant program to seven entities. Apprentices will receive a minimum of $15 per hour to start.

The auto industry is one of the largest in New Jersey but right now theres a national shortage of certified techs and mechanics, a gap that is expected to balloon to 25,000 over the next few years, Murphy said. These apprentices will receive hands-on training under the guidance of experienced auto technicians and diesel mechanics right here at Sansone Auto Mall. When they complete their training, theyll add 35 more names to our already impressive total of industry recognized professionals ready to take the next step in their careers.

Rohrman is happy the administration is placing a high value on apprenticeship programs.

The governor really gets it when it comes to the need to have viable alternatives to a college education, Rohrman said. Students skills are so varied and we need a trained workforce that values all their skills.

NCCTI students will be selected for the Sansone apprenticeship program based on attendance, their skill sets and competencies. They also must receive a recommendation from their instructor.

Our students are really excited about the opportunity, Brutton said.

Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development Robert Asaro-Angelo said the goal of the New Jersey Apprenticeship Network, which was created in 2018, is to pair employers with workers and training providers who can learn specialized skills.

The Department of Labor has put more than $7.5 million in competitive grants on the table to help eligible businesses, nonprofits and government agencies develop or grow apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship programs, he said.

Recipients of the GAINS grants announced Feb. 11 were ApprenticeIT, Employers Association of New Jersey, Interplex, Montclair State University, New Jersey Community College Consortium, New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program and Sansone. In total, the seven entities received $2.8 million.
