Swinging with Purpose: 91��Ƭ’s 28th Golfing for a Cause Drives Support for Youth

91��Ƭ hosted its 28th Golfing for a Cause fundraiser on Sept. 29 to benefit its Youth Services Department and the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund. Supporters gathered at in Livingston for 18 holes of golf and networking, along with an evening reception that included cocktail hour, dinner and raffle prizes.

91��Ƭ Interim Board Chairman Edgar Nemorin thanked all the participants, sponsors and donors for coming to and supporting the event. He talked about 91��Ƭ’s Youth Services Department, which will receive proceeds from the fundraiser, highlighting how 2,864 youth were served in 2024 through core programs and events. He said programs like that are essential to families.

“One of my personal missions is that youth and education opportunities should not be defined by a kid’s or parent’s zip code,” Nemorin said.

91��Ƭ CEO Simone Gagneron expressed her gratitude to all in attendance.

“Thanks to the continued support of our sponsors, along with everyone who participated, donated and purchased raffle tickets, NCC can continue doing great work for those in the community,” she said. “We’re so excited to be able to host this event and give everyone a day away from the office while supporting our youth.”

Christine Stern, Senior Vice President at , a Platinum Sponsor of the event, spoke during the networking reception. She commented about how there was great energy throughout the event and how HUB is happy to support 91��Ƭ.

“We live in a very complex and challenging world. God bless 91��Ƭ for the work you do,” Stern said. “We at HUB feel blessed for being a sponsor of this wonderful event and a partner in helping to manage the business risks associated with the work NCC does.”

Rocco Schiaffino, Assistant Vice President at , another Platinum Sponsor, addressed the crowd as well.

“It’s a privilege to partner with NCC. I believe we have worked together for over 20 years and we are very happy to play a small part in all the amazing work that NCC does,” he said. “We participate in many outings and this is one of our favorite events of the year. We are just very happy to be part of it.”

During the evening reception, prizes were given out to golfers. The first place team was comprised of Keith Kirkland, Norman Hymowitz, Jeremy Hernandez and Greg Ward. A variety of attendees also won raffle prizes.

91��Ƭ hosted its 27th Golfing for a Cause fundraiser on Sept. 23 to benefit its Youth Services Department and the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund. Supporters gathered at in Livingston for 18 holes of golf and networking, along with an evening reception that included cocktail hour, dinner and raffle prizes.

91��Ƭ Interim Board Chairman Edgar Nemorin thanked all the participants, sponsors and donors for coming to and supporting the event. He talked about how 91��Ƭ’s founder, the late Monsignor William J. Linder, regarded stewardship in high regard.

“Stewardship is sacrificing your time, talent and treasure for a common good. Thank you to all of you today for being good stewards to 91��Ƭ,” Nemorin said. “We are truly blessed and honored for the support that we continue to receive.”

91��Ƭ CEO Simone Gagneron said the presence of supporters, community leaders and friends made the event special and the organization’s work possible.

“NCC was founded on the belief that communities are stronger when we lift each other up. From affordable housing projects that give families a stable foundation to our education programs that equip individuals with the skills they need to thrive, we are making a difference every day,” she said. “Your support allows us to continue making an impact in our community.”

During the program portion of the evening, 91��Ƭ presented Dr. A. Zachary Yamba with a special recognition. Yamba retired from the NCC Board of Directors in December after serving for 11 years, five of which he served as chairman. He received a proclamation from the city of Newark and one from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, highlighting his years of service to 91��Ƭ and the community at large. He was also gifted a round of golf with three guests.

“Dr. Yamba’s accomplishments and impact to the community, nonprofits and educational landscape have been extraordinary,” Nemorin said. “He has been a leader, advocate, mentor and a friend to this organization for many, many, many years.”

Yamba said he was honored to accept the recognition and said that he continues to believe in the vision Monsignor Linder had for 91��Ƭ.

“That vision has endured since the riots in 1967 in Newark,” Yamba said. “Those needs continue today, perhaps even more so than back in 1967.”

Retired 91��Ƭ CEO Richard Rohrman served as the evening’s emcee. Although he’s been retired for three years, he continues to remain connected with the organization.

“I’ve seen all of the good work that 91��Ƭ has done and continues to do under Simone’s leadership,” he said. “I’m just really thrilled to be up here and have the opportunity to do this and stay connected to 91��Ƭ.”

Gagneron highlighted a number of initiatives at 91��Ƭ, including plans for The Morris, a 120-unit building for families in Newark’s Central Ward that will be fully Section 8 affordable housing, as well as eight affordable two-family homes, which NCC expects to break ground on in November. She also talked about plans for to offer green certifications to students starting in 2025.

Bill Passarotti, Senior Vice President of , spoke on behalf of the company which was one of the Platinum Sponsors of the event.

Proceeds from Golfing for a Cause benefit 91��Ƭ’s Youth Services Department and the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund. Desiree Crespo, a recipient of the Monsignor Linder Scholarship for her daughter, Mia, addressed the group at the event to share what the scholarship meant for her family. Crespo had to work multiple jobs to be able to afford tuition at her daughter’s Christian school. The pair would complete Uber Eats orders after work and school to help offset the cost.

“Just to know that I was able to not pay tuition for an entire year because of the scholarship that 91��Ƭ gave to me was great,” Crespo said. “My daughter and I were able to enjoy time outside of our car and in our home. I just want to say thank you to 91��Ƭ.”

During the evening reception, prizes were given out to golfers. The first place team was comprised of Michael Birch, Sal Caldarone, Douglas Eisenberg and Jeremy Garlock. Sebastian Troncoso won the men’s longest drive contest, Sarah Higgins won the women’s longest drive contest and Shane Brooks won closest to the pin. A variety of attendees also won raffle prizes.

91��Ƭ hosted its 26th Golfing for a Cause fundraiser on Oct. 5 to benefit its Youth Services Department and the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund. Supporters gathered at Cedar Hill Golf and Country Club in Livingston for 18 holes of golf and networking, along with an evening reception that included cocktail hour, dinner and raffle prizes.

91��Ƭ Board Chairman Dr. A. Zachary Yamba thanked everyone involved.

“To those who have sponsored this event, to the players, to the various donors and all the supporters we’ve had, we can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done for us,” he said.

91��Ƭ Board Member and Golf Committee Co-Chair Edgar Nemorin also expressed appreciation to sponsors, donors and staff members.

“As the old saying goes, it takes a village. And our continued success is based on our village,” he said.

91��Ƭ Chief Executive Officer Simone Gagneron talked about how 91��Ƭ has been changing lives for more than 55 years and is able to continue reaching 10,000 individuals each year thanks to ongoing support. She thanked all event sponsors, particularly Platinum Sponsors HUB International, Philadelphia Insurance and Withum.

“Early on in this planning process, you supported NCC. You said whatever NCC needs, we’re here for you. And we thank you and appreciate you for that,” she said.

HUB International Senior Vice President Bill Passarotti said it’s an honor to support the organization.

“I’m really passionate about what 91��Ƭ does so it makes it so much easier as a partner when we believe in your mission to rally behind you,” he said.

Richard Rohrman, who retired from the position of CEO at 91��Ƭ in 2021, served as the evening program’s emcee. He talked about the impact the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund has on young people’s future. The scholarship helps send students to Catholic and private schools to give them a strong educational foundation and encourage them to continue on to college.

“It’s really changed lives,” he said of the scholarship fund named after 91��Ƭ founder Monsignor William J. Linder.

Students from 91��Ƭ’s Youth Services Teen Enrichment Network (T.E.N.) were in attendance and assisted with handing out raffle prizes during the reception. The T.E.N. program is designed for high school students to promote positive behavior, develop career awareness and assist with college readiness. The Youth Services Department also provides after school programs and summer camp for Newark youth, along with a variety of events for families, including a Back 2 School Jam, Halloween Party, Breakfast with Santa and family dances.

91��Ƭ Hosts 25th Annual Golf Classic

The weather was beautiful for 91��Ƭ’s 25th Annual Golf Classic July 1, held at Cedar Hill Golf and Country Club in Livingston. Proceeds from the event benefit Harmony House, NCC’s transitional housing facility for homeless families; the Monsignor William J. Linder Scholarship Fund; and NCC’s youth and education programs.
“The annual Golf Classic is an opportunity to spend some fun time with our many dedicated friends and supporters. It has become something we all look forward to and it is a chance for us to remember the people who we impact and rededicate ourselves to the NCC mission,” said 91��Ƭ CEO Richard Rohrman. “Thanks to all who came out to support us and thanks to the NCC team who worked so hard to make it happen.”
The event’s Platinum Sponsor was Withum Audit Tax Advisory. Hole-in-one sponsors were Palmer & Cay, Ferry Carpet and NCC Board President Dr. A. Zachary Yamba.
Participants enjoyed an outdoor barbecue before an afternoon on the golf course. They then returned for an evening reception that included a cocktail hour, dinner and silent auction with a variety of items including purses, jewelry, sports memorabilia and artwork.
Board President Yamba welcomed attendees to the reception and thanked them for their support of 91��Ƭ, which he called “a very vital organization not only within the City of Newark and the County of Essex, but in terms of our mission.” He explained that the services NCC provides become even more important as government pulls back financial support for programs.
He asked attendees to spread the word about the good work NCC does.
“We have to live up to the dream that Monsignor Linder had after the riots in 1967. We have to keep that dream alive,” Yamba said. “Because the needs keep growing and we are here to make sure that dream and that support that he so dearly lived for, and died for, continues to thrive.”
During the reception, supporters heard from Kima Young, who has benefited from Harmony House, NCC’s transitional housing facility for homeless families. Young, who has been living at Harmony House for nine months, became homeless after she was evicted because her landlord wasn’t paying the mortgage on the property even though she was paying rent. She received a voucher to stay at Harmony House and currently resides there with her 15-year-old special needs daughter.
“Harmony House isn’t your typical shelter. It feels like home,” she said. “And it offers so much to its residents.”
Young has taken advantage of the support 91��Ƭ provides, including Family Service Bureau, which provides mental health services. She described a community feel at Harmony House and said NCC offers events for families, particularly around the holidays.
Young is unable to work because of health issues, but receives Social Security income. With the help of her Harmony House counselor, Young has put in applications for apartments for disabled residents and is hoping to be accepted in the near future.
“I feel very fortunate to have a roof over my head and thank 91��Ƭ and Harmony House for that,” Young said. “I thank each and every one of you for your support of Harmony House and other 91��Ƭ programs. The services provided make a real difference in people’s lives. We very much appreciate it.”
The Golf Classic also included a 50/50 raffle. Robert Shawah Sr. won the prize and generously donated it back to NCC.

91��Ƭ To Host 25th Annual Golf Classic July 1

91��Ƭ will hold its 25th Annual Golf Classic Monday, July 1 at Cedar Hill Golf and Country Club in Livingston, N.J. Proceeds from the event will benefit NCC’s youth and education programs; Harmony House, NCC’s transitional housing facility for homeless families; and the Monsignor William J. Linder Scholarship Fund.
“The annual NCC Golf Classic helps raise funds for our homeless families to provide the services they so desperately need. But in the process, we have a great time playing golf, eating, drinking and enjoying the great company,” said 91��Ƭ CEO Richard Rohrman. “It is really a fun filled event that we look forward to each year. Come out and enjoy.”
Golf Co-Chair and NCC Board President Dr. A. Zachary Yamba emphasized the importance of the event for 91��Ƭ and the children and families it serves.
“This year more than ever, in addition to supporting Harmony House and all the work that 91��Ƭ does, we want to place an emphasis on more participants and more donations to support the Monsignor Linder Scholarship Fund to enable promising young people to obtain not just their high school diploma, but also go on to college,” he said.
Registration for the event will begin at 10:30 a.m. July 1 with a barbecue scheduled for 11 a.m. There will be a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and after a full day of golfing, participants will enjoy an evening reception beginning at 5:30 p.m.
There will also be an opportunity to participate in a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction with RSINJ Inc.
